I've received some inquiries regarding Faerie Magazine so I thought I'd post the information here in my journal in case others may be wondering the same thing.
Question: So, I have a question about Faerie Magazine, is it really worth it? I haven't seen one in stores, I really need to go look, but I'm just curious if you get a lot out of it or if it's mostly just fluff...
My Answer: Well...I suppose it depends on what you're looking to get out of it. I personally think it's the most gorgeous magazine I've ever come across. The sheer beauty of it inspires me. The photography is beautiful. The interviews with the featured artists, such as Wendy Froud, Amy Brown and Jessica Galbreath are interesting. I enjoy the ads and discovering new fantasy artists and products. They also feature articles on interesting places that have some association with faerie lore. They do feature articles on the history and lore of faeries. They also feature musicians. Brian Froud has now signed on to write a column for each issue. I would suggest going to Borders or Barnes and Noble, or even your local independent book seller, and browsing through a copy to see what you think. It is definitely an art magazine. It's not hard hitting journalism! If your local bookstore isn't carrying it yet, you can request it. It's in nearly every system now. If you can't find a copy, let me know and I'll see what I can do!
Reply: That's just what I was hoping to hear. I was fearful of the fluffy nature of it, just someone trying to make a buck on an area of interest that's expanded in the last few years... I've gotten the mailings from world of froud on it which peeked my interest, and then you were mentioning it... it's good to hear it's more of an art mag... thanks! I'll definitely go look for it... and quite possibly buy up the back issues!!
My Response: You are so welcome! It's definitely not a piece of fluff that someone is printing in their basement and trying to pass off as a "real" magazine! It's a very beautiful, high quality magazine that is commercially produced and distributed. The editor is an artist herself and has been working in the fantasy industry for many years. She is familiar with, if not knows personally, many of the major faerie and fantasy artists. I would recommend ordering the back issues. Some of the articles are a series and continue from magazine to magazine. The winter issue is now on the stands, you may possibly find an autumn issue still out there somewhere, but the summer and the premier issue you would have to order. If you really like it, you can subscribe and they'll send it right to you!
